Our thirty-fourth, update email tracks recent actions and news concerning European Family Investment Companies (FICs). This Edition features 20 FICs from Belgium, UK, France, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Denmark and we examine how European FICs are managing in Q4 2022.

The year’s final quarter sees a flurry of positive Q3 results, despite acknowledgement of the difficult economic climate, with one FIC heralding its highest earnings in many years, another that its strong balance sheet will support continued acquisitions and a further saying that long-term value can be created in tough times.

And this month, just as in preceding ones, sees FICs continuing to grasp opportunities, investing in edutech, biotech, pharma and sustainable. One FIC expands its investment strategy into a new geographic market, one invests for exposure in India and one in an impact fund. Existing portfolio companies continue to be supported with investments, loans and acquisitions. FIC flexibility is again demonstrated by two portfolio companies being merged to form a larger, stronger business and another is sold.

We see another CEO succession, this time internal talent is promoted to fill the top job. And, echoing a story we ran last month, another FIC opens an innovation centre in a redeveloped iconic building in its hometown.
